Note: Section 28(2) SGB V (extra-cost agreement for fillings). The fund then pays for the comparable least expensive direct filling as a benefit in kind.

How to use the phrasebook
The 277 phrases are grouped into 13 situations in the order of a practice appointment: greeting and reception, medical history, pain and symptoms, examination and X-rays, findings, informed consent, local anaesthesia, treatment, aftercare, appointments, costs, emergencies and anxious patients. The search finds German and English words, with or without umlauts (e.g. "Zahnarztin" or "Zahnaerztin").
Every phrase uses the polite form "Sie", as is usual in German practices. Where a patient might struggle with a phrase, a simpler version is shown below it. The notes show what patients call something and what the technical term is, such as Zahnfleisch and Gingiva (gums), Plombe and Füllung (filling), Spritze and Lokalanästhesie (local anaesthetic). The Fachsprachprüfung tests both: everyday German with the patient, and technical German in records and with colleagues.
The consent phrases follow the duties of the German Patients' Rights Act. Under Section 630e BGB (German Civil Code), informed consent must be given orally, in good time and in a way the patient understands; it covers in particular the nature, extent and procedure, consequences and risks, necessity, urgency, suitability and chances of success, and alternatives where several equally usual methods carry substantially different risks or chances of success. The patient gets copies of anything they sign. If full coverage by the insurer is not certain, Section 630c(3) BGB requires the expected costs to be given to the patient in text form before treatment starts. Each card with a legal point names the provision; the sources are listed below.
Phrases with clinical content, such as instructions after an extraction, are kept general on purpose and marked. They give no times, amounts or drugs; insert what you decide for your patient. For costs we give no percentages or amounts.
"Listen" makes your browser read the German phrase aloud with a German voice. It helps with pronunciation and stress but is no substitute for talking with native speakers. The phrasebook complements the vocabulary trainer and the dental dictionary; it does not replace a language course.
Adult patients in German dental practices are addressed formally with "Sie" and their surname. "Du" is used with children and only when the patient offers it.
Are the legal statements reliable?
They quote or paraphrase the law text (Sections 630c, 630d and 630e BGB, Sections 28, 55 and 87 SGB V, Section 120 StrlSchV, Section 1 GOZ), checked on the official site gesetze-im-internet.de and a second publisher. They are general information, not legal advice.
Can I use the aftercare phrases as they are?
Only as wording. Aftercare rules depend on the procedure and the patient, so these phrases are marked and give no times, amounts or drugs. Insert what you decide for your patient.
How does read-aloud work?
It uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis with a German voice. Nothing is recorded or sent to us. If your browser has no German voice, the button is not shown.
A language aid from Munich Dental Academy, not legal advice and not clinical guidance. The laws in force, the product information and your own clinical judgement in each case are what count. · Publisher: Munich Dental Academy · As of 28 October 2026
